Best Webmaster Forums

The Internet has a huge number of webmaster forums. Despite their presence, a very little number contain that “warm” sort of community spirit. Some are moderated to extents that are unbearable. Others contain hugely saturated marketplaces, which is excellent if you are looking to purchase something, but horrid to sell – as you will be competing with writers that work for less than a penny per word, or overly cheap rates for whatever service you may offer.

#1 – NetBuilders.org – Net Builders contains an undoubtedly warmer community spirit than any other forum that I have ever visited, with regular posters that will willingly help you, owned by Will Spencer, a very successful web empire owner who has earned $70,000 USD in one month, through ad networks (i.e. AdSense). Will Spencer is highly approachable, unlike many other big faces, and will not hesitate to answer any queries that you may have.

#2 – WickedFire.com – Wicked Fire, despite their adult-themed fetishes, is a surprisingly warm community – but they are known to stereotype people, and it is extremely hard work to develop a reasonable name and to live up to that standard. They are certainly not a good market to “sell information” (i.e. eBooks), but you will be graciously thanked if you (pretty simply) contribute it without asking anything in return.

#3 – Forums.DigitalPoint.com – Digital Point is hugely crowded, so much so that it is unclear who you should approach if you need help. The moderating crew has also been known to “do their job,” sometimes arguably unfairly. Personally, I do not participate at Digital Point, but I do occasionally find myself looking through their wildly crowded marketplace.

#4 – TalkFreelance.com – Talk Freelance is reasonably quiet, but of those that reside, most have talents that I would consider unwise to ignore (particularly graphic designers). If they cannot resolve any queries that you may have, I’m sure that they will happily point you to someone who will.

I’m not aiming to sell you to any of these well-populated, (mostly) high-quality forums, but I would highly suggest that if you are new to the “webmaster world” to join up and start getting involved. Allow me to stress that it is very important that you ask questions, if there is anything that you are unsure about. Someone else will likely be wondering the same thing.

Technical problems with google search

Google’s search service has been hit by technical problems, with users unable to access search results.

For a period on Saturday, all search results were flagged as potentially harmful, with users warned that the site “may harm your computer”.

Users who clicked on their preferred search result were advised to pick another one.

Google attributed the fault to human error and said most users were affected for about 40 minutes.

“What happened? Very simply, human error,” wrote Marissa Mayer, vice president, search products and user experience, on the Official Google Blog.

The internet search engine works with stopbadware.org to ascertain which sites install malicious software on people’s computers and merit a warning.

Stopbadware.org investigates consumer complaints to decide which sites are dangerous.

The list of malevolent sites is regularly updated and handed to Google.

When Google updated the list on Saturday, it mistakenly flagged all sites as potentially dangerous.

“We will carefully investigate this incident and put more robust file checks in place to prevent it from happening again,” Ms Mayer wrote

Signature Spam

Hotlinking Files

I’ve never been too fussed with people hotlinking occasional files of mine, but today I discovered that my bandwidth was nearing the monthly limit. I was like what? Can’t be!

So I went in and checked my stats and discovered that the bandwith had tripled to what it normally is. I then noticed 2,000 uniques from a unknown website. I went to the site and looked at the source to see what they were linking to. It was a music file!

My host told me that I could stop that by disabling hotlinking. Now seemed like a good time to disable all hotlinking, which is bandwidth theft!

This one will disable image hotlinking:

Insert your own domain there. Place this in an .htaccess file in the root section of your domain.

If you don’t have an .htaccess file already, you can easily create one my placing that code in a text file, save it as htaccess.txt, upload it and then change the name to .htaccess (no extension)

To disable music hotlinking, or any other file, just add the the file extension like so:

I have been running a computer and technical forum for about eight months now and just last month had a need to create a trash forum for my first spammer. Today I removed my second spam. Not bad going for a forum these days! Let’s hope they stay away.
